Halloween Inspirations: Music

Even though I don't feel like Halloween is a huge event in the UK compared to places like the US, where they go all out with expensive parties, costumes, conventions and practically every neighborhood decorating their houses ready for the trick or treaters, I still love to celebrate it and get into the mood of Halloween.

Movies are a massive thing in October, when all of the horror movies get released into the cinemas so you can have a horror movie bender, but music is a big one for me. I have a huge, broad range of what kind of music I like, I practically like something from every genre, all the way from classical to screamo and everything in between.

Have you ever listened to an artist that's a bit out their and weird, and you kinda feel embarrassed about liking them so they become one of those artists you don't really display that you like? I have tons of them, the same goes for shows that I like, some are just plain embarrassing because of how weird or sketchy they are, but I'm not sorry because they're just too good.

Geordie Shore is a recent guilty pleasure of mine ngl.

Back to music, I have some artists that I think are weird and wonderful fits for Halloween, because their music is so abstract and sometimes plain creepy, but you like them anyway...

1. Melanie Martinez

This girl is my bae at the moment, I can't get enough of her album 'Cry Baby'. It's a concept album that tells the story of a character she created, who is called Cry Baby based on what people would call Melanie as a child,

The theme of the album and the songs, and the eerie videos, are kinda like a contradiction in themselves, because on one hand the scene and settings of the songs and their videos are really sweet, cute and child-friendly, and she's dressed in a lolita style which is famous for being a nice, innocent, pure doll-like style, but this is tied in with some adult themes including mental illness, sexual abuse, and substance abuse too.

It's kinda like the wolf in granny's clothes of music because it looks so innocent and sweet but is actually twisted and tragic, kinda like the original story of Alice in Wonderland, it's really artsy and eerie, it's perfect for Halloween.

Some songs I'd highly recommend to get you into the Halloween mood are; Mad Hatter, Tag You're It, Dollhouse and Sippy Cup. But tbh, the whole album is amazing.

2. Twenty One Pilots

An obvious one probably.
This is one of my favourite bands and one of those where any song that I listen to from them is good, they've never done a bad one in my opinion.

Their songs aren't really creepy, they just have eerie themes that can get you hyped up for Halloween in the darker sense. A lot of people feel that Halloween is a night where people can become whatever they want without being judged, because everyone hides behind a costume if you wanna get deep about it. To some people with mental illnesses, it's almost like hiding behind a mask that's glued on there which you can't get off despite trying to, so they use Halloween as a way to feel 'normal' for a night.

Twenty One Pilots create songs that have been dubbed 'Schizo-pop'. This basically means that they explore and try to represent what certain mental illnesses can be like for sufferers through the lyrics and the dynamic in the music. The songs are powerful and have this twisted, darker feel to them as it's like taking a peek into a mentally ill mind, which can be terrifying.

My favourite songs that I can reccomend from Twenty One Pilots are; Goner, Car Radio, Stressed Out and, of course, Heathens.

3. Paramore

It's kind of a given that Halloween is the time for some punk/rock styles of music, and Paramore has a few songs that are perfect for a Halloween party, or just a Halloween playlist that you can jam to whilst getting ready to go out, like I will be doing soon.

One song that I think everyone who knows Paramore will think of when it's Halloween is 'Brick By Boring Brick'. The video for this is soooo freaky at some points and dark, it's kinda got an Alice in Wonderland vibe. Long story short, this little girl who I guess is supposed to represent 'Alice' is running around this wonderland looking for friends, but she comes across creepy ass stuff, like a clown looking woman, a freaky mirror (If I remember correctly... Was it a mirror?) and then ends up falling down a grave that's supposed to represent the rabbit hole (I think), then Haley Williams goes on to bury the poor lass alive. Savage.

It's a cool band with some absolute bangers, more include: Monster, Misery Business, Playing God, All I Wanted, and Decode. We can't escape the Twilight days.

4. Ray Parker Jr - Ghost Busters

With the new Ghostbusters movie that came out with my absolute bae Melissa McCarthy, this will be played absolutely everywhere and if it doesn't I'm going home and I'm never celebrating Halloween again.

We all love this song, don't try to lie, don't hide it, don't deny it, just accept it.

5. Micheal Jackson - Thriller

NO ONE CAN DO HALLOWEEN WITHOUT THRILLER!!

Let's be serious, this is and always will be the biggest tune of Halloween ever, it's so perfect and was done by this sketchy but talented dude, you can't go wrong with this song at all. It's like when you're at a party or club and it's completely dead with miserable people who just aren't feelin it, but then Crazy In Love comes on and everybody gets up to honor B like they should with the best slut drops in this part of the world. No one can not do the thriller dance, unless they are severely drunk, and even then they give it a decent go.

Anyone going to a Halloween party?

I'm going as a cracked doll. Not Annabelle, scares me too damn much.

Bye!!
