Packing For University!

06:05 Roses in Water 0 Comments

I thankfully got accepted into my first university choice this year and I decided to live-in, mainly because of the distance between there and home. I also think it's part of the whole uni experience and you should definitely give it a try before you decide to stay at home.

Moving out was very stressful for me, mainly because I had my dad, who is a very OCD person about when and how things are done, bless him. It was stressful because I didn't realize how much I actually had to buy and bring to my new university accommodation halls. Seriously man, you've gotta bring plates, bowls, pots & pans, cleaning products, an iron, towels etc. Literally everything you'll need to live for the next year of your life there.

I've got some advice to give to anyone who's thinking about moving to university next year (or this year as a late enroller), so here we go.

1. Don't go ham with things like knives, forks & spoons.

In my case, I moved into a flat with 6 other people... Who all brought their own cutlery. Depending on your accommodation and how much you've paid for it, you'll probably have limited space in your kitchen for all your stuff. In my case, we have 2 pull-out drawers to keep your cutlery in, and when you've got easily about 100 + knives, forks & spoons you're not going to fit them all in.

My advice is to just hold off on buying them, and see what the situation with your flatmates is, mine are very nice and not at all stingy, so we pretty much share everything. My poor cutlery set is still in my storage boxes in my room, unused.

2. Food

This is tricky, because it depends on what kind of flatmates you have. Some will wanna do things their own way and keep to themselves, some will be like mine and share everything and you become like a big family of siblings, and then you might get some like the flat of my friend across from mine who has a guy who just doesn't share a thing and goes mental at you if you touch any of his crap.

Food is a tough one because you'll probably, once again, have limited fridge/freezer space. In my flat we have 2 fridges and 2 freezers, and they aren't big. At first, when we didn't know each other, we said we'd do the whole standard top shelf is yours, top shelf is mine kinda thing. Obviously with 7 of us it was a tight fit.

In the end when we all got closer and became like a family, we decided to chuck in on the essentials which we were all going to eat. So things like meat, eggs, milk, butter stuff like that. It made a huge difference to your individual food bill because it meant you only had to pay for the stuff you personally like, like snacks. This then meant more money for the sesh, which is what you live for as a first year university student.

My advice is just to not bring a crap ton of food and don't stress about the bill, because you probably won't fit it into the fridge, and you're more than likely gonna end up splitting the bill for essentials.
You will not get this... Sorry :(

3. Alcohol

Brings lots of it. If you think you're bringing too much, you aren't. The first week I was at my flat, I didn't remember most of it because every single night we bonded by getting drunk together. We went to our onsight pub and chilled together there, took part in loads of freshers and pre-freshers events together as a flat, and even threw a few flat parties where it started out as a chilled out drink together as a flat, but once you let me take control of the music and I start bringing out all of the bangers and the oldies, you attract attention and your door knocks all night.

Also, if you don't drink that's okay too. It means you can be known as the person who takes care of the drunk friends, which makes you Mother Teresa in their eyes because you're the one who stops them from doing something embarrassing when they're mortal.

Also, you'll find out what kind of drunk you are!

4. Freshers week

Be prepared. You're gonna need money for tickets and wrist-bands for the events, especially if you have a pub crawl, which you probably will. In my opinion, the pub crawl was the best event we had at my freshers week, but it was lethal. It was probably the most drunk I've ever been in my life, but I had a good time so it's sweet.

Prepare to get drunk, prepare to lose your money quickly, and prepare to encounter some absolute legends at your events, because almost every single one of them includes alcohol. Even if you say "I'm really not gonna get that drunk tonight" or you're just not that much of a drinker anyway, much like myself, forget about it because the vibe is too strong and you'll find yourself with a drink in your hand anyway out of nowhere.

As soon as your flatmates or anyone else hears someone say "I'm not gonna get drunk tonight" then they become a target. It means that they will make it their sole purpose in life to get you completely hammered that night. Enjoy.

5. Pre-Freshers

This is NOT the same as Freshers week. When I got there, I arrived a week before my course actually started, and there were soooo many drunk nights and events at the accommodation site. It was mental, and I loved it, it was the best fun I've had in my life and it made me closer to my flatmates.

I innocently finished my pre-freshers thinking "Freshers was so good, but I'm glad I can rest now" hahahahhaha no friend.

That was pre-freshers, and true freshers week was about to start. Get ready for the marathon.

6. Student Loan

I moved into my accommodation on the 10th of September, a week before my course started. This meant that I didn't get my student loan until about 1 1/2 weeks. Before going, my parents kindly gave me about £80 to get me through the week, and my brother had bought me my freshers week ticket, like a true gem.

This money only goes so far when pre-freshers starts, and then you've gotta have enough for freshers a week after, so really depending on how many events you go to (which I recommend should be them all), your poor dollar is gonna dwindle away fast. It's so worth it though, you really do have the best time.

7. When you actually get your loan

Parents: "Do NOT go on a silly spending spree when your money comes in"

My Parents: "Don't piss your money up against a wall when it comes through, we won't bail you out"

It's true guys. Don't go ham on Beauty Bay, eBay, Primark or any of these sacred places, ok. Cause you get paid in installments people, that means your money, once you've paid your rent, has to last you from September until January (if it's anything like mine).

All's I can say to you is budget your cash and work out how much a week you can spend on yourself, not including food.

8. Rent

When it comes to paying your rent you will have a pay in full option, where you can pay your rent for the whole term up until you get your next installment of your loan.

I recommend doing that because then what you have left over is yours, it goes towards anything you need. That way you don't have to worry about overspending into your rent money, and you can then budget more clearly.

9. Pets

Don't hide pets in your flat unless you go to this amazing university where you're allowed them.

I mean, it's possible. I know of a flat in my accommodation park where they're hiding a rabbit, which makes me hella jealous because I have 2 buns at home that I miss to death. Truthfully, I did beg my flatmates to let me bring them up and hide them, but obviously it's a bad idea.

If you get caught, depending on the strictness of your accommodation, you could get kicked out, charged, or you would lose your deposit money. Even though it's hard being away from your loved babies, it's not worth the risk people.

My advice, do what I'm doing. Get a house next year with a friend that allows animals, and go ham with the beautiful babies. As long as your timetable allows time for them ofc.

10. Going Home

There is a reccommendation that says not to go home for the first month of your stay at university, because going home too early can make your homesickness worse.

For me, this isn't true at all. I go home every single weekend without fail, and everytime I have a break from my course. I don't find that it makes me homesick at all, actually I believe that it helps me cope with my new life living away.

In my case, being at my new flat away from my family and hometown makes me miss it, of course it does, but that doesn't mean that I'm sitting in my room 24/7 crying and looking at pictures of my family. To be honest, the first two weeks you're there isn't that hard when it comes to being homesick, because quite honestly it feels like a holiday. It's when you get like 2 months in and you start to realize, whoa... I'm living here now. That's when the homesickness gets you because the novelty starts to wear off and the reality hits you in the face.

For me, when I'm at my flat, I miss home but then when I come home, even though I'm happy to be home and see my family and friends, it makes me miss being at my flat with my flat family. It creates this healthy longing for these two places, and it balances each other out.

So don't worry about being homesick, you're all in the same boat and you're all going to get homesick. That's a good thing because that means you can all relate and comfort each other through it.

That was my advice for anyone starting university, don't be afraid of it because as long as you try your best to immerse yourself into the life and events, you'll have the best time ever.

Have fun!

Halloween Inspirations: Music

12:20 Roses in Water 0 Comments

Even though I don't feel like Halloween is a huge event in the UK compared to places like the US, where they go all out with expensive parties, costumes, conventions and practically every neighborhood decorating their houses ready for the trick or treaters, I still love to celebrate it and get into the mood of Halloween.

Movies are a massive thing in October, when all of the horror movies get released into the cinemas so you can have a horror movie bender, but music is a big one for me. I have a huge, broad range of what kind of music I like, I practically like something from every genre, all the way from classical to screamo and everything in between.

Have you ever listened to an artist that's a bit out their and weird, and you kinda feel embarrassed about liking them so they become one of those artists you don't really display that you like? I have tons of them, the same goes for shows that I like, some are just plain embarrassing because of how weird or sketchy they are, but I'm not sorry because they're just too good.

Geordie Shore is a recent guilty pleasure of mine ngl.

Back to music, I have some artists that I think are weird and wonderful fits for Halloween, because their music is so abstract and sometimes plain creepy, but you like them anyway...

1. Melanie Martinez

This girl is my bae at the moment, I can't get enough of her album 'Cry Baby'. It's a concept album that tells the story of a character she created, who is called Cry Baby based on what people would call Melanie as a child,

The theme of the album and the songs, and the eerie videos, are kinda like a contradiction in themselves, because on one hand the scene and settings of the songs and their videos are really sweet, cute and child-friendly, and she's dressed in a lolita style which is famous for being a nice, innocent, pure doll-like style, but this is tied in with some adult themes including mental illness, sexual abuse, and substance abuse too.

It's kinda like the wolf in granny's clothes of music because it looks so innocent and sweet but is actually twisted and tragic, kinda like the original story of Alice in Wonderland, it's really artsy and eerie, it's perfect for Halloween.

Some songs I'd highly recommend to get you into the Halloween mood are; Mad Hatter, Tag You're It, Dollhouse and Sippy Cup. But tbh, the whole album is amazing.

2. Twenty One Pilots

An obvious one probably.
This is one of my favourite bands and one of those where any song that I listen to from them is good, they've never done a bad one in my opinion.

Their songs aren't really creepy, they just have eerie themes that can get you hyped up for Halloween in the darker sense. A lot of people feel that Halloween is a night where people can become whatever they want without being judged, because everyone hides behind a costume if you wanna get deep about it. To some people with mental illnesses, it's almost like hiding behind a mask that's glued on there which you can't get off despite trying to, so they use Halloween as a way to feel 'normal' for a night.

Twenty One Pilots create songs that have been dubbed 'Schizo-pop'. This basically means that they explore and try to represent what certain mental illnesses can be like for sufferers through the lyrics and the dynamic in the music. The songs are powerful and have this twisted, darker feel to them as it's like taking a peek into a mentally ill mind, which can be terrifying.

My favourite songs that I can reccomend from Twenty One Pilots are; Goner, Car Radio, Stressed Out and, of course, Heathens.

3. Paramore

It's kind of a given that Halloween is the time for some punk/rock styles of music, and Paramore has a few songs that are perfect for a Halloween party, or just a Halloween playlist that you can jam to whilst getting ready to go out, like I will be doing soon.

One song that I think everyone who knows Paramore will think of when it's Halloween is 'Brick By Boring Brick'. The video for this is soooo freaky at some points and dark, it's kinda got an Alice in Wonderland vibe. Long story short, this little girl who I guess is supposed to represent 'Alice' is running around this wonderland looking for friends, but she comes across creepy ass stuff, like a clown looking woman, a freaky mirror (If I remember correctly... Was it a mirror?) and then ends up falling down a grave that's supposed to represent the rabbit hole (I think), then Haley Williams goes on to bury the poor lass alive. Savage.

It's a cool band with some absolute bangers, more include: Monster, Misery Business, Playing God, All I Wanted, and Decode. We can't escape the Twilight days.

4. Ray Parker Jr - Ghost Busters

With the new Ghostbusters movie that came out with my absolute bae Melissa McCarthy, this will be played absolutely everywhere and if it doesn't I'm going home and I'm never celebrating Halloween again.

We all love this song, don't try to lie, don't hide it, don't deny it, just accept it.

5. Micheal Jackson - Thriller

NO ONE CAN DO HALLOWEEN WITHOUT THRILLER!!

Let's be serious, this is and always will be the biggest tune of Halloween ever, it's so perfect and was done by this sketchy but talented dude, you can't go wrong with this song at all. It's like when you're at a party or club and it's completely dead with miserable people who just aren't feelin it, but then Crazy In Love comes on and everybody gets up to honor B like they should with the best slut drops in this part of the world. No one can not do the thriller dance, unless they are severely drunk, and even then they give it a decent go.

Anyone going to a Halloween party?

I'm going as a cracked doll. Not Annabelle, scares me too damn much.

Bye!!

My Favourite Autumnal Makeup Products

07:39 Roses in Water 0 Comments

Autumn is the best season for makeup in my opinion, because it's when we can get away with those bold colours like dark lips, intense gold, red and bronzey shades, and loads of bronzer.

I'm pretty simple with makeup, I don't mix it up very often but I sort of have a different look/theme for each season... Unintentionally. My mood changes with the seasons, and when my mood changes most of the time my makeup and clothing choices go with it. Typical.

By the way, I am NOT a pro MUA or makeup artist person, it's just my experiences with the makeup I have tried, I'm honestly like a child with crayons.

golden time

1. Nars Sheer Glow Foundation

This never changes. Before using this I used Rimmel Wake Me Up Foundation, which was good and it did the job but it lacked the glowiness and soft finish that Sheer Glow has. I'm in love with this foundation, it's by far the best product that Nars has ever come out with, and I love it so much it hurts. It's perfect for all seasons, but the colder seasons especially, as it's high coverage and the colour that I use (Mont Blanc) gives your skin like a nice cool tone to it, like an ice queen without being a Casper. It's perfect for bold eyes and lips because it makes them stand out all the more, so if you whack on this foundation with some bronzer, blush, golden eyes, and berry lips it's going to be a 10 everytime.
Colour: Mont Blanc

2. Lips: Charlotte Tilbury Glastonberry, Mac Velvet Teddy, Honey Love & Diva, and NYX Liquid Suede Sandstorm

None of these are new if you live on YouTube or have subscriptions to beauty outlet newsletters via email. I bought the Charlotte Tilbury lipstick as an impulse buy when I got a bit of money and went mad in Selfridges, I regret it but I'm not sorry. It's a gorgeous lipstick for autumn, it's classy as f and reminds me of Christmas... So I guess it's not really autumnal when it comes to me, but anything that's remotely berry coloured will work on your lips in autumn. I regret this lipstick because it was freakin expensive for a lipstick man, it was £23 people... For me, that's a lot for a lipstick, perhaps too much, but I couldn't help myself because it looked so nice, the colour was gorgeous, the packaging rose gold, and it smells like berries. You can't go wrong when it's scented, it's a bargain.

Mac is the holy grail of lipsticks I think, their best product in my opinion are their lipsticks because they're creamy, go on amazingly (even when you've got chapped lips), and they're decently priced. I'd say that these lipsticks, each colour is £15.50 each, goes on better and is more pigmented than the £23 Charlotte Tilbury lipstick. So the lesson learned is that pricier isn't always better, I got this with a nars concealer as well. I bought this also on impulse when I bought the foundation, I figured omg yes, matching concealer, yes we're doing it, done. But it wasn't anything special, I paid £22.50 for it and the one I used before was 100 times better, which is the Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer for £4.16 in Boots.

Back onto the lipsticks, my favourite colour ever from Mac that I've tried is Velvet Teddy. I'm simple as f when it comes to makeup, and I'm quite new to wearing lipstick so I don't have lots of them, but this colour literally works with everything. It's great as an everyday lip colour when you've got foundation on your lips and look like a lipless ghost, or when you're going out at night and you go that extra bit of glam for your makeup. It's just awesome, and it will go with every colour scheme of makeup that you can think of. Honey Love is also one of these that will go with anything, it's a little nuder than Velvet Teddy and has got a little more of a gloss to it even though it's matte, but it does the job. Both of these colours go really nice with bronzey/warm brown eyes (in my experience).

Diva is one of those autumnal colours once again, like Glastonberry by Charlotte Tilbury, but it's a little darker and a bit more bold... You'd need to be a bit more ballsy to wear this one during the day because it's that much of a in-your-face-WHAH colour. It goes really nice with golden eye shadows, like I'm repeating over and over, any berry-coloured lipstick will go amazingly with golden/bronzey eye shadows, I promise.

Nyx Sandstorm is just life, it's the best nude/brown lip I've ever seen or invested in, it's beautiful as it goes on wet and dries into a soft matte, however it was sold out absolutely everywhere at one point and when I finally got my hands on one it was in Barcelona, and it was the last one. If you get one, treasure it well.
velvet teddy, diva, honey love, sandstorm, glastonbury

3. Eyes: Morphe 35T Palette

I started off with a long list of eye shadows that I loved and literally counted down the days until Autumn for so I could go mental and literally drown my eyes in them, but then it hit me... Every single shade that I had wrote down from all different brands like Nars, Mac, Too Faced, Urban Decay etc. Were all pretty much in the Morphe 35T palette.

This palette is the ultimate Autumnal eye shadow den, it's filled with amazing bronze, warm browns, and a crap ton of amazing golden shades (which are my faves unless you missed it). There's this one shade in this palette which is the most striking gold I have ever laid eyes on, it's so pigmented and shiny, glittery, shimmery and just gives me the will to live it's so beautiful.

This is my first Morphe Palette, and the first experience I had with the brand, and I love the shadows. They are so lovely to blend, put on, easy to take off as well, and the shades are really lovely. Each palette has something which will be your cup of tea, they're so diverse and large and they are AMAZINGLY PRICED. For the amount of shadows you're getting, and the diameter of the shadows themselves, they are so worth the money and more.

For 35 beautiful. high quality eye shadows you will pay £21, which I thing is an absolute steal. Especially when the quality of the shadows (I think) bests bigger brands such as Mac, which are famous for their shadows. It's a must have if you're like me and you love warm brown, taupe, golden eye shadows, and it's well worth the money for what you're getting.

the Morphe 35T palette, I enlarged it a little so you can clearly see the gorgeous shades

4. Bronzer: Rimmel London Natural Bronzer and Benefit Hoola

Best of both worlds here as these two are completely different in price range. The Rimmel bronzer costs £5.99 and I got mine from Boots, and the Benefit Hoola bronzer costs £23.50.

I find that both of these work really nice together. I usually start by putting the Rimmel bronzer on first, just dusting it lightly on my cheeks, forhead, jaw, wherever you like, and that creates a warm dust of shadow on your face, unless you layer it or build it up it's not really strong enough by itself, so once I've dusted my face with the Rimmel one I go over it with the Benefit Hoola. I feel like alone Hoola can be tricky, it's either too much or too little, but over the top of Rimmel it creates a golden/warm sun kissed glow on your face, especially over a pale foundation like the one I use. It almost gives you a warm doll-like tone to your face, so you really don't turn into Casper, instead you turn into a "I will cut you" contour Casper.

5. The last thing I'll mention is highlighter

Highlighter has become a relatively new thing, and it's glorious. It makes me feel like a unicorn when a little sweep of stary-light is going across my cheekbones. I feel like a walking strobe light, and that makes me feel like a queen.

I don't actually use a conventional highlighter... Technically it's not a highlighter, or it's not classed as one. I use the shade Butter Pecan from the Too Faced Semi-Sweet Chocolate Bar Palette. This might make some of the hardcore MUA's out there want to throw up in  my face that I use an eye shadow for highlighter, but it works so well guys.

I always use it on my inner corners to highlight those, so one day I was just like... Let's see if this works here, and it was like an epiphany. The angels of my bank account sang, and I was so happy that I didn't have to spend my life savings of £24 + on a highlighter.

Highlighter is a must have in autumn, as the sun has kinda f'ed off now. Bye England, bye forever. I'll return for half a week in July.

this photo just shows you a swatch of Butter Pecan

That's my little countdown of the makeup products that I will be living off throughout Autumn so I don't get depressed about the sun ditching the nation.

If anyone has any better recommendations of products you think I or anyone else will love, please let me know in the comment section!

Thank you for bearing with me!
